Introduction
eSCL(SCLoverEthernet)isAppliedMotionProducts’languageforcommandingandqueryingmotioncontrol
productsoverEthernet.Itissupportedbyseveralmotioncontroldevices,includingtheST5‐Q‐Ex,ST10‐Q‐Ex
andSV7‐Q‐Ex.Inadditiontosendingcommandstoadrivefromahostinrealtime,youcanalsouseourQ
Programmersoftwaretoembedsequencesofcommands,calledQPrograms,inadrive.Theseprogramscan
besettoexecuteauto maticallyatpowerup,orcanbetriggeredbycommandssentfromthehost.
Thisguideisintendedtohelpyouconnectandconfigureyourdriveandtohelpyoustartwritingyourown
eSCLhostapplication.
GettingStarted
TherearefourstepsrequiredtocreateaneSCLapplicationwithyournewAppliedMotionProductsmotor
driver.Eachoftheseisexplainedinaseparatesectionofthismanual.
1. Connectthedrivetoyour PC.Thisincludesgettingthedrivephysicallyconnectedtoyournetwork(or
directlytothePC),settingthedrive’sIPaddress,andsettingtheappropriatenetworkingpropertieson
yourPC.
2. Configurethedriveforyourmotorandapplication.Forstepmotordrives,you’llneedtouseasuitable
versionofourConfiguratorsoftware.Forservos,useQuickTuner.
3. LearntheSCLandQlanguages.TheeSCLUtilityisagreatwaytoexplorethefeaturesandsyntaxof
thispowerful,flexiblelanguage,withhelpfromtheHostCommandReferenceManual.
4. Createyourownapplication.Thisguideincludes codeexamplesinVisualBasicandC#tohelpyouget
started.Youcandownloadtheexamplesintheirentiretyfromourwebsite,butwerecommendreading
theexplanationsinthisguidefirst.
ConnectingtheDrivetoYourPC
Thisprocessrequiresthreesteps
• Getthedrivephysicallyconnectedtoyournetwork(ordirectlytothePC)
• Setthedrive’sIPaddress
• SettheappropriatenetworkingpropertiesonyourPC.
Addresses,Subnets,andPorts
EverydeviceonanEthernetnetworkmusthaveauniqueIPaddress.Inorderfortwodevicestocommunicate
witheachother,theymustbothbeconnectedtothenetworkand theymusthaveIPaddressesthatareonthe
samesubnet.Asubnetisalogicaldivisionofalargernetwork.Membersofonesubnetaregenerallynotable
tocommunicatewithmembersofanotherunlesstheyareconnectedthroughspecialnetworkequipment(e.g.
router).SubnetsaredefinedbythechoicesofIPaddressesandsubnetmasks.
